General Instructions [Used to be Pre-1800 vs. post-1800 authors and Persons not known as authors]

When choosing a preferred form of name for an author, follow the instructions in RDA 9.2.2. For pre-1800 authors, prefer the options that allow you to choose the form of name from a reference source. For post-1800 authors, prefer the options that tell you to use the form of name that predominates in works issued by that person in their own language. RDA does not maintain the distinction between pre- and post-1800 that AACR2 used; however, given the nature of special collections cataloging, this distinction will be maintained for our work.

When choosing the preferred form of name for persons not primarily known authors, follow the instructions in RDA 9.2.2. Prefer the options that allow you to choose the form of name from a reference source.
