Zc50 - The Southwest

Yale Collection of Western Americana

Scope

Use for works about the present states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and southwestern Colorado; some works will include California and portions of northern Mexico. This is the region held by Mexico prior to 1847 (Texas, prior to 1836). Also class here works about the following topics:

  • Colorado River
  • Gadsden Purchase
  • Mexican boundary
  • Mexican War
  • Santa Fé trail and trade
  • Coronado
  • Espejo
  • Nunez Cabeza de Vaca
  • Powell, John Wesley
  • Class works about the Grand Canyon in Zc56 (Arizona)

Classification

Since sections of Zc50 for the Mexican War are very crowded, add additional lines for works issued by the bodies listed below.

  • The first line is the class number.
  • The second line is from the tables below.
  • The third line is the month/day of issue.
  • The fourth line is a sequential cardinal number.
  • For republications of the same title add a letter to the fourth line.

If necessary, add additional states to the tables below.

Past practice encompasses a variety of approaches; many books in the collection are not classified according to the instructions given here. Generally, do not reclassify unless necessary for collocation.
