Notes - Advertising matter (500 or 590)

When advertising matter clearly belongs to the book (see DCRM(B) 5B5.1), and even in the few cases when it might not belong to the book, its presence is often noted in both DCRM(B) and non-DCRM(B) cataloging of pre-20th century items. Do not note advertising matter that is on covers, wrappers, or dust jackets.

Advertising matter in DCRM(B) cataloging

For treatment of advertising matter in DCRM(B) cataloging, see DCRM(B) 5B5. Pages containing only advertisements are mentioned in the statement of extent when they clearly belong to the publication (see rule 5B5.1). If it is not possible to mention the advertisements concisely in the statement of extent, account for them in a 500 general note. If the advertisements do not belong to the publication according to the criteria in 5B5.1, their presence and extent is recorded in a 590 local note.

590     ‡a Advertisements on [8] p. at end not noted in pagination.

Advertising matter in non-DCRM(B) cataloging

RDA 3.4.5.3.2 includes the instruction to “disregard unnumbered sequences of inessential matter (advertising, blank pages, etc.)” in the statement of pagination. When cataloging according to RDA, do not expand the pagination statement to include unpaged advertising matter. Instead a 590 local note can be made if considered important by the cataloger:

590     ‡a Advertising matter on [no.] unnumbered pages at end, not noted in pagination.

When advertising matter is paged separately, the number of pages is given in the collation. Optionally, provide a 500 general note:

300     ‡a vi, 124, 3 pages
500     ‡a Advertising matter: 3 pages at end.

When advertising matter is included in the main pagination of the book, its location may be provided in a 500 general note:

300     ‡a vi, 124 pages
500     ‡a Advertising matter on pages 119-124.

Advertisements scattered throughout the book.

When advertisements are scattered throughout the book, this is indicated in a 500 general note as follows:

500     ‡a Includes advertising matter.

Advertisements in serials

Advertising matter in serial publications is not noted.
