Publishers’ Dummies
Publishers’, or booksellers’, dummies are special sample copies of books issued to canvassers, showing sample pages, illustrations, bindings, etc. Their pagination rarely matches that of the actual book to be sold.
Publishers’ dummies are cataloged as printed monographs with their own bibliographical records separate from the records for the complete books. The following fields are always included:
500 | ‡a A salesman’s dummy. [or a similar note]
650 | 0 | ‡a Dummies (Bookselling) ‡v Specimens.
655 | 7 | ‡a Dummies. ‡2 rbmscv |
In addition other appropriate subject headings (usually the same as those that would be made for the complete book) and name access points are made so that anyone looking for the complete book will also find its corresponding dummy.
