Zc17-19 - Railroads

Yale Collection of Western Americana

Scope | Classification | Table of Railroads

Scope

  • Class here works about railroads and their development in the West.
  • Works describing the exploration of possible routes are classed with the place described since their value lies more in the description of the country rather than in the railroad data they contain.
  • Works published by a railroad that describe a particular locality are classed with that locality. For example, works issued by the railroad which promote the sale of its lands are classed with the locality. Works issued by the railroad which promote tourism in the locality it serves are classed with that locality.

Classification

The call numbers for railroad materials are created like those in the rest of the Western Americana collection. The primary difference is the use of a cutter for the name of the railroad or a geographic area before the last line of the call number. The one exception are works classed in Zc17.

Zc17 – General works

  • Use for works about railroads including their construction, regulation, etc. that are too broad to class either by locality or a specific railroad.
  • Land grant material, if general in content, classes here if limited to legal questions, charges of misuse, unethical acquisition, etc. Otherwise class by location.
  • For monographs the second line is a three digit date followed by the first two letters of the main entry.
  • Beginning in 2000, for books first published after 1999, use all four digits of the date for the second line.
  • For serials the second line is a cutter based on main entry.

Example

Whitney, Asa. National railroad connecting the Atlantic and Pacific, [1845].

Zc17 General work about railroads
845wh Year of publication of the first edition followed by first two letters of main entry

Zc18 – Railroads by locality

  • Use for works about railroads in a particular geographic area that are not about a single railroad.
  • The second line uses a standard Yale numbers for states, Canadian provinces, or the following regions:
    A11 - Mississippi-Missouri Valley
    A12 - Southwest
    A13 - Pacific Coast
    A14 - Canadian Northwest
  • For monographs the third line is a three digit date followed by the first two letters of the main entry.
  • Beginning in 2000, for books first published after 1999, use all four digits of the date for the third line.
  • For serials the third line is a cutter based on the main entry.

Zc19 – Individual lines, A-Z

  • Use for works by or about a particular railroad.
  • Land grant material, in order to class here or in Zc17 (if general) must be limited to legal questions, charges of misuse, unethical acquisition, etc. Otherwise class by location.
  • The second line is a cutter from the table of railroads followed by the letter from the table below.
a Charters, acts of incorporation, and works related specifically to them
b-g Serials. There is no third line in the call number
h Miscellaneous pamphlets that don’t fit elsewhere
i Surveys of route and other engineering material (See scope note at top)
j Timetables. Each railroad should have one collection level record that contains all the timetables relating to that railroad. The piece is marked with a sequential number on the last line. Always include a 505 formatted contents note, using a title from the item in hand.. If appropriate, a cataloger may also create an individual record (see below).
k General works, history, finance, investigations, the railroad’s land grants, etc.
m Guides. Guides are limited to the railroad itself; descriptions of the country the railroad passes through are classed with the geographic area
  • The third line is a three digit date followed by the first two letters of the main entry. Do not use for serials or timetables.
  • Beginning in 2000, for books first published after 1999, use all four digits of the date for the third line.

Timetables

Occasionally timetables were cataloged individually, and classed with the third line having the date and the first two letters of the main entry. Effective 16 March 2011: as catalogers encounter these railroad timetables, they should be added to the collection level record, if one exists, and reclassed using sequential numbering on the third line. Individual catalog records should be kept, but make the following changes to the MFHD: update the call number to the sequential numbering sequence, give the former call number in a reclassed note, and add an 856 link to the collection level record. There will be one item record (barcode) for each box. As boxes are added the enumeration field should be used to show the sequential numbering of the previous box.
