Italian Festivals

Scope

The Italian Festivals Collection was acquired over a four year period. It consists of 247 titles dating from 1541 to 1862. The general cataloging policies for pre-1800 monographs are followed. This is a closed collection; however, policies for notes and access points are followed for other festival books.

Size

The size boundaries are:

Octavo:
up to 25 cm. high
up to 23 cm. wide
Quarto:
between 26 and 37 cm. high
over 23 and up to 31 cm. wide
Folios:
over 37 cm. high
over 31 cm. wide

Marking

The following guidelines are used when marking volumes for Italian Festivals.

  1. Mark on Yale bookplate when there is one, generally in the upper left corner.
  2. Mark on verso of last page, lower right hand corner, when there is no Yale bookplate. The lower left hand corner is the alternate location when the lower right hand corner is unusable.
  3. If the last page is unmarkable (e.g. too dark or shiny or filled with text or illustrations), mark the verso of the first usable page from the end

NOTE: Do not mark call number on original wrappers.

Classification

Italian Festivals are classed as a name collection with sequential numbering. The festival books are arranged by city of publishing, and then by date.

Notes

Provide a summary note describing the festival (e.g. Festival in Ferrara for the occasion of the marriage of Francis Stephen, Duke of Lorraine, and Maria Theresa, Archduchess of Austria, held in the presence of Count Ludwig Khevenhüller)

Subject, genre, and added tracings

  • Personal name subject headings with suitable subdivisions for the honoree
    (i.e. ‡a Elizabeth, ‡c of France, Queen, consort of Philip IV, King of Spain ‡d 1602-1644 ‡x Death and burial).
  • Topical and geographic subject headings as appropriate
  • The Genre heading Festival books subdivided geographically and chronologically, making an additional tracing if place and/or date of publication differs from place and/or date of event
  • Additional genre headings if necessary.
  • Make added name entries for illustrators, engravers, etc. as well as for printers, publishers and booksellers.
  • Make appropriate copy specific notes and local tracings for provenance.
